Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinski (Russian/Lithuanian, 1875 - 1957), set design, ink and gouache drawing on buff-tone paper, background stage set revealing domed theater interior, indistinctly signed lower right and verso, stamp for "United Scenic Artists", production listed as "Prima Ballerina", design No 71, framed and matted behind glass, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age and use including waving of paper, 1/8" h. abrasion to right edge, light toning/ fading, loose in frame, image: 10" h. x 15" w., frame size: 19" h. x 23" w.[PROVENANCE: From the estate of Irina Pabst, designer, artist and philanthropist, and daughter of Sergei Denham. Denham was one of the individuals that rallied investors (as World Art Inc.) to rescue the Ballet Russe with World Art purchasing the ballet company in 1937, which later became Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After Rene Blum (co-founder), died in Auschwitz, Sergei Denham became the ballet organization's president and company director until Denham's death in 1970.]
