Eugene Gustavovitch Berman, (Russian/ American,1899 - 1972), Ballet Russe set design for "Icare (Icarus)", inscribed upper left "Icare Scene I", watercolor and gouache on artist board, 1938, signed verso with monogram and date to obverse UL, depicts landscape and columns, framed with floating mount, sight size: 10 3/4" h. x 15" w. [Note: Berman designed the scenery for the ballet Icare produced by Denham's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, London, 1938, ballet and music by J. E. Szyfer, and choreography by Serge Lifar.] [PROVENANCE: From the estate of Irina Pabst, designer, artist and philanthropist, and daughter of Sergei Denham. Denham was one of the individuals that rallied investors (as World Art Inc.) to rescue the Ballet Russe with World Art purchasing the ballet company in 1937, which later became Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After Rene Blum (co-founder), died in Auschwitz, Sergei Denham became the ballet organization's president and company director until Denham's death in 1970.]
