November 2nd Auction
Striking pieces of better vintage jewelry and silver will be featured in the November 2 live online auction to be held by Winter Associates. Exceptional craftsmanship is found in both categories.
A micromosaic Egyptian revival brooch featuring a pharoh’s portrait is set in 18k gold and cat lovers will want to consider the beautifully detailed reverse intaglio crystal brooch depicting two felines side by side. By careful examination the amazing exactness in the mosaic process can be easily understood. The work of creating a successful reverse intaglio piece by carving a crystal from behind and then skillfully painting an image in amazing detail with the three dimensional end effect, once understood, is perhaps even more amazing. A woman’s 18k enamelled watch suspended on a companion slide chain, both with enamel decoration and a Victorian 14k slide bracelet with enameling, a diamond, and pearls are notable examples of their era. For an extra bit of colorful vintage flair to wear on one’s wrist are three Art Deco 14 K bracelets with carved cabochons, onyx and carnelian links.
More contemporary tastes are likely to be drawn to the pair of 18k bangle bracelets with 45 round full cut diamonds, or perhaps the many beautifully designed heavy gold chains and bracelets. There will be over forty jewelry lots offered including sterling pieces by Jensen, Tiffany and Yurman and as well as vintage costume jewelry.
Tiffany and Jensen need no introduction, sterling by these two makers and others not generally as well-known but also fine early 20th C. craftsmen will be in the auction. A notable Tiffany piece is an Olympian pattern chip server, this is what was pulled out in the 19th C. to properly serve the new novelty of the day, potato chips! Karl F. Leinonen silver is well represented by a 6 pc tea service, 10” and 5” bowls, and serving flatware. According to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts’ entries discussing pieces in their collection, Karl Leinonen was born in Finland, where he apprenticed and worked before arriving in Boston in 1893. He joined the Handicraft Shop, an early 20th C. silver workshop, when it was founded in 1901. Tostrup, another Scandinavian but born in Norway, created the 24 pieces of gilt washed and enameled flatware that will be in this sale. Tostrup was awarded the Norwegian King's Medal of Merit and was appointed a Knight of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for his work.
Contemporary art lovers will be drawn to the Joseph Albers inkless, pencil signed print offered “Intaglio Duo H”, c. 1958, an elusive work to capture properly with a camera. A second print from this edition resides at the Yale University Art Gallery and was gifted to them by the artist. Another subtle work is a bronze just under 13” high by Nat Neujean from a small edition of just six. It features a standing man with arms crossed over his chest and wearing a flat brimmed hat. In contrast, more readily viewed and all with a bit of whimsy are Ernest Trova’s ‘Manscape’, a pink granite Deco style pelican 23” high, a Carl Wagner bronze of an orangutang and two works by Dan Murphy in metal and Lucite. Assorted traditional classical revival bronze figures will be represented in this sale, but the most important early sculpture is a medieval carved wood and polychrome depiction of Madonna and Child 22” h.
Early Continental oils will include a pastoral scene with shepherd attributed to the workshop of Nicholaes P. Berchem, an early Dutch still life, and a signed piece by Jan de Hoese.
Old Lyme, Vermont, Maine and other New England views in oil are featured by artists including William Chadwick, Thomas R. Curtin (5), Roger Dennis, and many others.
Specializing in estate liquidation, this sale will feature other items typically in Winter Associates’ auctions such as over 20 lots of gold and silver coins from a few private homes including some graded in slabs and featuring a 1924 gold St. Gaudens. Also, a good selection of okimono and netsuke from two private collections, fine furniture by Karges and Margolis, glassware including Galle, Baccarat and Steuben; and a variety of Oriental rugs will be offered.
