December 14th Auction
Winter Associates December 14th 2020 sale will feature fine silver, jewelry, a large assortment of coins and currency from a private collection that will be offered in over 60 lots, better prints from c. 1600 to the 1960’s, as well as handsome antique and reproduction furnishings including a Seth Thomas Regulator tall case clock.
Impressive, even from across the room, are a pair of silver 30 inch high Baroque style nine-light candelabra, both bases are marked with the maker Heinrich Friedeberg, and the German pre-1886 stamp "14 Loth" indicating 875/1000 silver. According to a catalogue entry for another item offered in the past by Sotheby’s Heinrich Friedeberg (1819-1885) was born in St Petersburg, Russia but apprenticed in Berlin. In 1848 he became court jeweler to the Prussian princes and founded the company S. Friedeberg Söhne with his brother in 1850 as court jeweler and gold and silver manufacturer. He was also court jeweler to the Czar of Russia. A likely more familiar maker for silver collectors, Georg Jensen, is represented in the sale by a Cosmos set that includes a 20” long tray, pot, sugar and creamer. Other midcentury design includes smaller Jensen pieces, a “Silver Sculpture” pattern flatware service by Reed and Barton and a modernist tray and candleholders by J.L. Reyes. Meissen porcelain that will also enhance anyone’s table includes over 100 pieces of rich blue onion pattern featuring a covered tureen and other large serving pieces.
Walter Mc Teigue founded a jewelry manufacturing company in New York at the end of the 19th C. His customers were Tiffany, J.E. Caldwell, and Black Starr and Frost who all recognized Mc Teigue’s fine designs and high quality, after almost 100 years, the surviving entity was bought out by Tiffany and Co. Included in this sale is a Mc Teigue 18k bird pin, set with an emerald eye and 5 diamonds. Other vintage jewelry with fine craftsmanship include a 18K brooch with painted cherub miniature; a 14k three citrine bracelet with the largest centered citrine measuring 21mm x 16mm, and there is an interesting assortment of other gemstone decorated creatures such as a peacock, and a fly. Some Native American silver jewelry includes a Jimmie King Jr. cuff with inlay. Fashion conscious individuals will also want to consider the three Hermes silk and many other silk scarves in this sale along with generous lots of costume jewelry.
Coins and currency, from a private collection, will be auctioned in approximately 60 lots. Eighteenth century coins feature many American including five 1780’s Connecticut coppers including one 1785 Roman Head and one 1788 Connecticut Copper, mailed bust left; and a 1760 Voce Populi colonial coin. Many other American coins include an 1862 three cent encased postage; 1803, 1806 and 1807 draped bust half dollars; 1795, 1802 and 1814 large cents; many Morgans and 20th C. gold and silver coins, some offered in large groups.
A Pablo Picasso aquatint “Le Peintre et son Modèle “ features subject matter that inspired Picasso to create many versions of the same topic in the early 1960’s, about 50 variations are recorded, this image is signed in pencil and is Bloch’s 1133. From the same estate in New Rochelle, NY comes another fine print, however from centuries earlier. Cornelis Drebbel’s (Dutch 1572-1633), engraving "Grammar", c. 1600, is after a painting by Hendrick Goltzius. Drebbel, was an apprentice to Goltzius (and also married his sister), he eventually turned to the scientific studies, and was involved with early telescopes. Works by other well-known print makers in this sale will include those by John Sloan, Louis Lozowick, Levon West, and two Dali’s from the 1960’s etc.
Nathan Margolis was born into a cabinetmaking family in Russia, and then had an apprenticeship in England all before he came to the US at the age of 18 in 1893. Connecticut had the good fortune that he opened his shop in Hartford, leaving beautifully crafted reproductions and fine furniture in family homes in Hartford and surrounding towns. , The shop survived under family ownership until 1974; the shop records and patterns were sent to the Henry Francis DuPont Museum in Winterthur, Delaware. A Margolis banquet table that has a handsomely figured mahogany top and extends to 151” with all three 24” leaves inserted, a set of ten Chippendale form chairs with beautifully carved crests and splats as well as a set of six Hepplewhite style chairs with acorn and oak leaf inlaid splats will be in the December sale, all good examples of this firm’s fine craftsmanship.
A circa 1886 Seth Thomas regulator No. 15, with a handsomely figured walnut and burled veneers case from a home on Main Street in Farmington is special inside and out. The movement is stamped with the Seth Thomas diamond and circle ST. The No.15 movement is among the finest that Seth Thomas produced. This is a high-quality clock that is rarely available.
