From a collection of fine homes and estates in New England comes a fresh variety of Americana and early American furniture, a Civil War soldier’s collection, Continental decorative arts including multiple 19th C. Viennese enamelware, Paintings, Prints, Asian woodblocks, scrolls, carvings, etc., as well as Contemporary art and sculptures, Oriental Rugs, fine silver, and more will cross the block.
From a stately 19th C. South Windsor, Connecticut home comes a good selection of early American furniture including two pieces with provenances of interest, a tiger maple tall chest, is inscribed “W 1793 D” on an inside backboard. The Nathan Liverant and Son receipt dated 1970 reads "Rare Tiger Maple Tall Chest, completely original, including brasses made in Newport Rhode Island by William Dennis - 1793”. Second, a New England joined oak chest with a four panel front, the 1971 receipt from Lillian Cogan, available to successful buyer, records the origin of the chest to be Hartford, c. 1680. From the same house comes early American furniture including other chests, inlaid bookcase desk, settle, slant lid desk, drop-leaf tables, stands, corner cabinet, trencher, beds, etc., along with fine reproductions by Warren Chair Works, Eldred Wheeler, etc.; and Americana including weathervanes, stoneware, early tools and andirons, metalware, treenware, early glass inkwells and others.
A rare Civil War soldier’s collection from an estate in Massachusetts offers the public a look into the daily life of Union soldier Private Albert I. Sands, in the years of 1862-1868, with numerous manuscript letters, his Hassam bowie knife inscribed “A. I. Sands, Co. F. 38th Reg. M. V.", his sketch book with military scenes, early photographs of Sands in uniform, pocket bible inscribed "Albert I. Sands, Cambridge Mass, Co. F. 38th Regt. Mass Reg. Gen. Emarys Brigade Banks Expedition New Orleans La." along with notations in the bible of fort locations visited, Sand’s wedding ring, etc. Private Albert I. Sands of Cambridge, Massachusetts served in the Massachusetts 38th Infantry Regiment, Company F, and saw action at the Battle of Port Hudson and other conflicts ranging from 1862-1863. Eight letters from Sands to family members describe the war, sickness, death, troop movements, battles, and other topics. In addition are sixteen letters by Private Adolph H. Levee, dated 1863-1864, addressed to Allie (Albert I. Sands) and Carrie (Albert's sister and Adolph's love interest), discussing Pvt. Levee's actions during the war, his injuries, religion, the war, troop movements, officers, etc. Other Civil War era items from the same estate include pro-Union poem by J. W. Hering, titled "Jeff Davis", c. 1860's, describing hanging Jefferson Davis, marching through the south, and other pro-Union sentiments, inscribed at the bottom "written from Hateras Inlit, N.C. Gen. Burnside Division, as well as a twenty-four Civil War themed envelopes, all with pre-printed motifs depicting pro-Union imagery, politicians and generals, political cartoons, and abolition messages.
For admirers of Thomas Hart Benton, two lithographs “Gateside Conversation” and “Corral” are strong examples of the artist’s “Regionalism” style. From the same private Connecticut collector is “Self Portrait – 55 Division Street” by Ivan Le Lorraine Albright, along with 30+ more prints by Joseph Hirsch, Lawrence Kupferman, Emilio Amero, Nora Woodson, Luigi Lucioni, Harry Sternberg, Ellison Hoover and others.
Other eclectic items of interest include Nautical objects including ship models, scrimshaw, maritime telescope, oil paintings; WWI & WWII bayonets and knives; books including many on Native Americans; porcelain including Herend, Flora Danica, Limoges; Atmos clock; art glass paperweights; early advertising; Hurichol beaded sculptures; sterling silver by Tiffany, Wallace, Gorham, Reed & Barton including holloware, flatware services, etc.; Handel, reverse painted and Art Deco lighting along with reproduction stained glass lamps; Contemporary artwork including “10 by 10” portfolio containing nine limited edition of silver gelatin prints of the "East End artistic community" including Arthur Miller, Willem De Kooning and Lee Krasner by a number of important photographers and sculpture by Vasarely, Sobrino, Morton Fishman, Andy Warhol poster, etc.; Jewelry including 18K Waltham hunting watch, and more.
