1747 Sampler by Jamima Marsh, overall design is more typical of American samplers yet the wool background is more typical of English samplers, silk on wool, stitches include cross, outline, Algerian eye, satin, and French knots, two alphabets and numbers 1 through 9 appear in the top half of the sampler, followed by the verse: "We stand expos'd to every sin / While Idle and without Employ / But Business holds our Passions / And keeps out all unlawful joy", a bold border of flowers emanating from a basket at the bottom center surrounds the sampler, old but not original frame, good condition with scattered minor loss to ground fabric, discoloration from dirt at top, chipped frame, sight size: 12" h. x 9" w.; frame: 17" h. x 14" w.
