1823 English sampler by Laura W. Mewton, age 15, silk on wool, poem in very fine cross stitches at top: "There is a flower call'd innocence / It grows in childhood's field / Parental care its best defence / And piety its shield. / O Laura guard this lovely flower / It blossoms for the sky / Go plant it near religion's bower / And watch it with thine eye.", maker's inscription at center: "L.W. Mewton's Sampler / finished in the 15th year of her age / 1823", and at the bottom, "Born March the 25 / 1809", the poem and inscriptions are surrounded by floral motifs and a flowering vine border, in old but not original frame, with the label of an English framer; also an old label, "dated 1823 / $1125-…", good condition with scattered minor damage and fading, not examined out of frame, size sight: 17" h x 13/8" w; frame: 18 7/8" h x 15" w.
