18th/19th C. oil on panel naive rendition of Elizabeth Schuyler, wife of Johannes Schuyler (the tenth mayor of Albany, NY), after painting featuring Johannes Schuyler and his wife, she is seated on a red chair within a parlor beside a window, an open book rests on red pillow under left hand, she wears a black overdress with hood over white veil and frilled sleeves, no signature viewed, framed, wear consistent with age, areas of paint loss between window and woman and to face, extensive inpainting throughout, sold as is, ss: 19 1/2" h. x 14" w. [NOTE: Records from the anonymous Institution indicate that the painting was found among the effects of Simeon Jocelyn (1799-1879), minister and abolitionist in New Haven.] [PROVENANCE: Sold to benefit a New England Institution.]
