19th C. Maine Seaman/Machinist Daniel D. Merrill and wife Eliza A. Russell Bartlett manuscript collection of papers consisting of personal and business correspondence of American Seaman and machinist Daniel D. Merrill (b. 3 March 1820). Merrill worked as a machinist in the machine shop of Saco Water Power Co. in Biddeford. Included are Merrill's certificate as an American Seaman attesting to a scar on his leg and foot, a manuscript Family Record, and a series of letters from Merrill's second wife, Eliza A. Russell Bartlett, written to her husband during a long separation in 1853. She describes family lifeon a farm in 19th C. Maine: the children have measles, chicken pox and typhoid fever; she is "lonely and homesick", she describes the joy of attending a "Camp meeting" in 1853, and the "good roasting corn" they eat from their fields along with potatoes and beans from the garden. She also wrote that "Father has gone out to speckled mountain today with Officer Blake of Norway [Maine] to arrest Sam McKeen for selling liquer [sic]." Also included are a couple of letters regarding Merrill's daughter, Joanna, who wanted to go to school, although there was not enough money. Receipts for tobacco, lard, tongue, coat, cigars, and iron kettle, a Brittania teapot and a rat trap, along with many other items. Business papers also include an Indenture (a contract) to lease the "Corinthian Hall" in Bath, Maine for use as an Armory with the right to sublet it as a dance hall.
