19th C. oil on canvas laid down on board, c. 1840s, portrait of gentleman seated next to table with potted red geranium, sitter formally dressed in black frock coat, with ruddy cheeks and graying sideburns, signature "W.L. [or I.N.] Appl (?)…Pinxt." partially visible LR, craquelure, isolated surface roughness, blacklighting reveals isolated in-painting to background and flower pot, extensive in-painting of bodice of dress coat and especially right sleeve, face and hands appear relatively untouched, flowers and signature do not fluoresce, not examined out of green and burnished frame, ss: 33" h. x 24" w.
