Alfred Richard (American, 1937-2016), two wooden sculptures with extensive inlay decoration: first, a floor sculpture depicting double-sided human form, one side with female genitalia the other with phallus and breasts, three pieces including round detachable head, torso, and square base with tapering sides, expected wear throughout, condition as found, approx.. 46" h. x 19" w. 20" d.; the other a table sculpture depicting torso with phallus, pierced at bottom to suggest two legs, oval base, expected minor wear, 18 1/2" h. x 4 1/2" w. x 9 1/2" d., both sculptures with estate stamp. [Dr. Alfred Charles Richard Jr. attended Boston University, where he earned both masters and doctorate degrees in Latin American History. In 1965 he moved to Connecticut and accepted a professorship at Central Connecticut State University, a position he would hold until 2006. According to family members, iconography from Mayan and Aztec civilizations informs many aspects of his work.
