Alfred Richard (American, 1937-2016), wood sculpture, three stacked polygonal blocks, upper block rotates on trapezoidal midsection supported by hexagonal base, inlaid patterns evoke abstracted faces and geometric patterns, inlaid tree knots throughout, estate stamp underside, 32" h. x 27 1/2" w. x 20" d. [Dr. Alfred Charles Richard Jr. attended Boston University, where he earned both masters and doctorate degrees in Latin American History. In 1965 he moved to Connecticut and accepted a professorship at Central Connecticut State University, a position he would hold until 2006. According to family members, iconography from Mayan and Aztec civilizations informs many aspects of his work. Richard''s sculpture is also characterized by the intricate arrangement of inlaid segments and wood knots of contrasting color.]
