American Sampler,"CATHARINE VAN LIEW HER SAMPLER MADE MAY 11 1809", silk on linen, upper case alphabet above inscription; lower case alphabet below inscription, along with numbers 1 ? 9; then a row of letters A - F worked in eyelet stitch, at base is a basket of flowers flanked by birds and pine trees, gilt over gesso wood frame, condition: very faded (date is completely faded); dark green dye has run slightly in flowers of lower scene; overall yellowing, frame has scattered chips, 11 3/4" h. x 9 3/8" w., frame; 10 1/4" h. x 7 5/8" w. sight.
