American School, early 19th C., map of the world or "The World", dated 1822, by Sarah Frances Brush (1797 - 1887), aged 25 years, watercolor and ink on paper, finely rendered double hemisphere, oceans colored light blue, countries outlined and colored in red, blue, yellow and green, Australia is titled "New Holland", Louisiana Territory not noted, elaborate floral decoration near borders, framed behind glass, not examined out of frame, expected undulations, toning and foxing, approximately eleven small tears, possibly repaired, near border, largest 2 3/4" at top, frame size: 17" h. x 21" w. [Family Provenance: Sarah Frances Brush was born in 1797, the last of twelve children born to Lemuel Brush (1745 -1831) and Ame(y) Holmes (b. 1860), in Amenia, New York. This work was done two years before she married her childhood friend and local physician, John William Vethaken on February 24th, 1824. In 19th century European and American schools and private education, it was common for female students to practice geography and drawing by making maps in pen and ink and watercolor. The union produced ten live births but only four lived through infancy, one of which, William James Vethake (WJV), fought in the Civil War, a private in the 5th Regiment, New York Infantry Company ''A''. She died November 2nd, 1887 in Chillicothe, Ohio.]
