American school portrait of John Coffing Holley (b. 1837, d. 1865), the son of Connecticut Governor Alexander Hamilton Holley (b. 1804, d. 1887, CT Governor 1857-1858) and the grandson of John Churchill Coffing (depicted in portrait Lot 142 in this sale), portrays a young man and his dog, a 1859 Yale graduate, he died at an early age, 28, in San Francisco where he had gone to ill health after his labors for the re-election of Mr. Lincoln, ss: 27" h. x 21 1/2" w., in period handsome gilt frame with flower buds at corners and mottled treatment to cove molding, scattered small stains and speckled paint loss.
