Antonio Castillo (Spanish, 1908 - 1984), three costume designs for "The Mute Wife", watercolor and gauche on paper, c. 1950, depicts Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo costume designs for three of the male characters, two being doctors, and third of man in yellow with billowing pantaloons, two with fabric scraps archived in UL corner, stamped and signed in LR corner, matted and framed behind glass, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age and use including toning, small tears and pinholes, ss: approximately 16" h. x 14" w. [PROVENANCE: From the estate of Irina Pabst, designer, artist and philanthropist, and daughter of Sergei Denham. Denham was one of the individuals that rallied investors (as World Art Inc.) to rescue the Ballet Russe with World Art purchasing the ballet company in 1937, which later became Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. After Rene Blum (co-founder), died in Auschwitz, Sergei Denham became the ballet organization's president and company director until Denham's death in 1970.]
