ASIAN: Toyohara, Chikanobu (Japanese, 1838-1912), "Yamashiro, Moon over Saga, Minister Nakakuni and the Lady Kogo", woodblock print, unknown edition, originally issued in 1884, depicts the Emperor's messenger playing the flute, Lady Kogo's maid peers from the gate, upper panel depicts Lady Kogo playing the koto, signed, matted and framed behind glass, framed, not examined out of frame, wear consistent with age including toning, minor creasing and waving of paper, etc. ss: 12 3/4" h x 8 1/2" w. [NOTE: The beautiful Lady Kogo was known for her koto playing, which attracted the attention of the Emperor. Prime Minister Taira no Kiyomori became jealous, so Kogo ran away to the hills of Saga. The Emperor sent his aid to find her. Riding past a cottage on horseback one night, he heard the beautiful music of a koto being played inside. He began to play his flute, and Lady Kogo's maid rushed to the gate to see who it was. Kogo returned with him to the Emperor's palace.]
