Attributed to George Edward Candee (American, 1838-1907), "Mount Chocorua", c. 1868, watercolor on paper, depicts pastoral New Hampshire landscape with field, barn, cows in mid ground, hills in distance, wear consistent with age including toning, appears to be laid down, sold as found, ss: 13 5/8" h. x 19 5/8" w. [PROVENANCE: Purchased from the museum shop at the New Haven Colony Historical Society.] [EXHIBITED: "From Pencil to Palette: Landscape by George Edward Candee (1837-1907)", 1992 exhibition at the New Haven Colony Historical Society, curated by Elizabeth Pratt Fox and Lisa Quintana Broberg]. [PUBLICATION: The watercolor was also published in the accompanying exhibition catalog, written by Elizabeth Pratt Fox and Lisa Broberg Quintana, as figure 7; its identity has been confirmed by Fox.] [NOTE: about artist's process: According to Candee scholar, Elizabeth Pratt Fox, Candee sketched in pencil en plein air, and then returned to his studio to complete a watercolor and then an oil painting. All three survive of his landscape of Mount Chocorua and they are illustrated in the catalog (p. 8, figures 6-8). The pencil sketch is part of a large group of sketches purchased by The Connecticut Historical Society in 1987, and the oil on canvas painting is in a private collection. The pencil sketch and watercolor were done about 1868 when Candee traveled to New Hampshire.]
