AVIATION: Wooden fragment from Orville and Wilbur Wright's Kitty Hawk airplane hangar mounted on printed cardstock, distributed by Lester D. Gardner in 1948, the Wright Brothers made the world's first sustained, powered airplane flight at Kitty Hawk, NC, on December 17, 1903, the card features a reproduced black and white photograph of figures seated around small wooden hangar, text below reads, "Birthday Greetings and Souvenir of Nov. 23" (date penned in), "The First Hangar- Kitty Hawk, A true piece of the First Airplane Hangar in the World, etc." (beneath photo/lithograph of same), "A true piece of the first airplane hangar in the world", small cross-section of wood affixed at center, followed with text below: "1898--My Golden Anniversary Year--1948. May you have Golden Days, too! Lester D. Gardner, 251 West 101 Street, New York, N.Y.", wear consistent with age and use including expected even toning, overall card size: 5 1/2" h. x 4 1/4" w. [NOTE: It is reported that upon his death in 1948, Orville's executors discovered original flight fabric and asked Gardner, who had also been on the board of M.I.T., to distribute sections to aeronautical luminaries.] [VERBAL PROVENANCE: Consigner's grandfather was an aviation luminary who holds several aviation records, was a test pilot for Boeing, and was one of the pilots filmed in the 1933 feature film 'King Kong'.]
