C., framed behind glass, signed lower right, not examined out of frame, ss: 27 1/2" h. x 39 1/4'' w. (Shahn was a well known Jewish artist. Formally trained at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, Shahn was noted for his outspoken views and political activism. The image depicts French workers in white and black jackets, arms upraised, being rounded up in front of a brick wall bearing a red official decree from the Vichy government. This, the first of Shahn's war posters, aimed to inspire American workers to keep up the fight and avoid the fate of their French counterparts).
