BOOKS/ EPHEMERA: Four 19th C. books and a framed 1813 birth certificate, details include: Pennsylvanian German hand-colored Fraktur birth and baptismal certificate, 1813, also known as a "Geburts und Tauf-schein", hand-colored polychrome figural and floral decorations throughout, printed by Johann Ritter and Company in Reading, PA, wear consistent with age, staining throughout, toning, repaired tears through middle, other tears to margins, glass with break and loss lower right, ss: 15 3/4" h. x 12" w.; and four estate books, sold as found, including Henry Hallam's "View of the State of Europe During the Middle Ages", Vol. II only, Philadelphia, 1824, with notable ownership inscription on a tipped-in slip: "Wm. F. Lee / 2d Lieut. 2d Regt. U.S. Inftry. / Fort Randall, D.T. / February 21st, 1859", this appears to be William Fitzhugh Lee, VMI Class of 1853, commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Infantry in 1855, stationed at frontier posts including Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, and later a Confederate officer mortally wounded at First Manassas in 1861, also included: John Locke, "An Essay Concerning Human Understanding", Vol. II only, London, 1753, fourteenth edition, with early ownership inscription "Appleton Robbins's Book 1759," in worn early leather with crude/vernacular leather spine covering or repair; Cicero, Orationes Quaedam Selectae, London, 1793, with Dartmouth-related ownership inscriptions and a vernacular book cover; and Report of the Secretary of the Navy, Washington, 1867. Various early leather and cloth bindings, worn, stained, defective, and incomplete; odd volumes only, none collated, all sold as found, with all faults.
