Description:

Cast iron "Dumb" Stove of George Washington, mid 19th C., designed by Alonzo Blanchard (1799-1864), possibly manufactured by J. L. Mott Iron Works, New York, depicts the full-body standing figure holding a document and draped in a Roman toga over his military uniform (Blanchard's design is after the 1826 marble statue of Washington by Francis Chantrey installed in the Massachusetts State House), hollow body comprised of two halves, remnants of a bronze colored finish, wear consistent with age and use including expected pitting, worn finish and two repairs to base, 47 1/2" h. x 14 1/4" w. x 8" d. [NOTE: Dumb stoves usually did not have a firebox and were instead connected to a functioning stove on a floor below so as to heat multiple rooms using only one firebox. An identical stove was sold at Skinner's Boston on August 10th, 2014, lot 773, for $8,610.]
