CHINA: Seven "Votes for Women" Suffragette themed porcelain plates and teacups, manufactured by John Maddock & Sons, England, c. 1913, reportedly commissioned by the infamous socialite and American Suffrage leader Alva Vanderbilt Belmont for a tea house at her Newport, Rhode Island, mansion for the cause, all with cobalt blue glazed "Votes for Women" slogan to rim and green glazed maker's mark on base, pieces include: two teacups with loop handle, one cracked and repaired, 2 1/2" h.; two saucers, 6" diam.; and three small plates, 6 1/4" diam., all with wear consistent with age and use, one teacup cracked and repaired, plates with expected minor imperfections. [VERBAL PROVENANCE: Consigner's father was the first Director of the Newport Preservation Society, items are owned by descent.]
