CIVIL WAR: Manuscripts, photographs, and pocket bible by and belonging to Private Albert I. Sands, dated 1862-1868, items include: eight hand written letters by Private Albert I. Sands of Cambridge, Massachusetts who served in the Massachusetts 38th Infantry Regiment, Company F, seeing action at the Battle of Port Hudson and other conflicts ranging from 1862-1863, letters are dated 1862-1863, 1868, addressed to various family members, discussing pleasantries, Pvt. Sand's actions during the war, sickness, death, troop movements, battles, and other topics, each has been transcribed in type, all are ink on paper, unframed and in sleeve protectors, wear consistent with age and use including toning, creases, staining and expected loss, largest: 10" h. x 8" w.; 19th C. pocket Bible New Testament, American Bible Society, New York, 1862, bound in leather side cover with strap, printed on thin paper, inscribed on the second page " Albert I. Sands, Cambridge Mass, Co. F. 38th Regt. Mass Reg. Gen. Emarys Brigade Banks Expedition New Orleans La.", also included on the interior cover is a list of forts believed to be where the bible was brought as well as other written text throughout the bible, leather is scratched and worn, most pages are intact with minor rips in the internal cover, 3 1/4" h. x 2 3/4" w. x 3/4" d.; and collection of 19th C. photographs of Albert Sands, including: one ambrio-type photograph of Albert Sands in Union soldier uniform, encased in a hinged box with velvet, copper and glass enclosed, the copper has symbols of cannons, drums, eagles, and flags, lid is broken off with hinges still attached to main body, ss: 2" h.x 1 1/2" w, one tin-type photograph of Sands in uniform, encased in a thin copper layer with floral engravings, ss: 2" h.x 1 1/2" w, three carte-de-vistes photographs depicting Sands as a Union soldier, two in the same position and marching uniform, taken by Charles G. Danforth, one in an over coat uniform, taken by Haley& Metgalf Photographers, all three have the name "Albert I. Sands" written in ink on the back, ss: 3 3/4" h. x 2 1/4" w., one carte-de-vistes photograph depicting a young boy in a dress posing next to a chair, the back is inscribed "3-4-84, We think that this is A. I. Sands", ss: 3 3/4" h. x 2 1/4" w, one carte-de-vistes photograph of a suited man with chops and a bow tie, written on the back is "A. I. Sands" , 8 3/4" h. x 6 3/4" w
