Description:

CLOCK: Massachusetts shelf clock signed "Aaron Willard Jr. / Boston" on reverse glass panel, ca. 1820. Case: Mahogany case with gilded pine front door panels which have turned rope decoration, some scattered loss of veneer and gilt, some over-painting of gold, top of the hood has a scroll and a center finial plinth, but the plinth is not original as it is too short and does not fill the space between the scrolls, plinth has a period brass finial which has been gold painted, red painted mask around the dial (when upper door is opened) is original, though has had some repairs on the back, case bottom shows evidence it originally had four feet, likely brass ball feet, now missing. Tablets: The upper glass is an old piece of glass and perhaps original, but all of the decoration on the upper glass is repainted with areas of craquelure and loss, lower glass panel is original with very fine original stenciled border, center scene of this glass with young girl is largely if not totally repainted, though very nicely executed by well-known restorer, Paul Koda. Movement: 8-day weight-driven timepiece movement is original, dial is original to this movement. Dial: The dished dial is original and has the painted marking "5" on the reverse, center painting with birds and bushes on the dial is a 20th century addition, ground painting on the dial is original, but the numerals, lines and minute markings have been relined in the distant past. Hands: The hour hand is original, minute hand is a replacement in the same style. Weight: The lead weight is original (now removed from clock), weight had been in the clock for many years and its weight warped the movement seat board making the movement and dial sit lower than originally intended. Pendulum: The pendulum and rod are original, detached hands and piece of veneer, 31" high to wood finials. [NOTE: Many of the above statements based on a report conducted by Chris Bailey in 2006.]
