Huntington, (American, 1816-1906), "Julia Foster Ward", 1879, oil on canvas, portrait of a young lady, seated with roses in her lap, signed and dated LR, ornately molded gilt frame, donated 1942, restoration including minor inpainting, minor damages, loss to frame, 34 1/8" h. x 27" w. [Provenance: This is a memorial portrait of Julia Foster Ward, who died at the age of twenty one in 1878. According to family records, the composition was likely based on a photograph while other details--such as hair color--were supplied to the painter by the sitter's mother, Harriet Sarah Foster Ward. The painting remained within the family until it was given to the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1942. Deaccessioned from the Wadsworth Atheneum, sold to benefit acquisition funds.]
