Delilah Bradford embroidery, 1799, probably Mid-Atlantic region (Maryland?), silk chenille yarns over very fine linen, verse: "When tired and sick of all mortal vanities, the religious mind reposes itself in the firm expectation of drinking at the fountain of life, and of bathing in rivers of immortal pleasure. Even death (which to the guilty is the gloomy period of all their joys, and the entrance to a gulph of undying wretchedness) brightens into a smile, and, in an angel's form, invites the religious soul to endless rest from labour, and to endless scenes of joy, Delilah Bradford's work 1799", flanking the verse are large sprays of flowers-heart's ease on the left and rosebuds on the right, a tin star is mounted at the top center and edged with yellow chenille yarn, the letters are worked in tiny cross stitches, dark wood frame, poor condition, discolored throughout center, appears to have been washed and the black dye of the letters ran; brown spots around right and bottom edges, holes at top right and middle of left side, frame is scuffed, 17 1/4" h. x 20" w. frame; 15 1/8" h. x 17 7/8" w. sight.
