Description:

Early American butterfly tavern table frame with alterations to top, butterfly supports, and drawer, pine with possibly butternut, single drawer with trapezoidal front, oval top formed when deep leaves are extended, turned splayed legs on stretcher base, pencil and chalk inscriptions throughout including 1955 Christmas dedication under table leaf, history of red paint but stripped, expected wear including water stains and scratches, approximately 25 1/8" h. x 29 1/8" w. x 37 3/4" d. (with leaves extended). [Antiques collector, furniture restorer, and author Henry Hammond Taylor (Connecticut, 1878-1933) featured this table on the cover of his book, "Knowing, Collecting and Restoring Early American Furniture" (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1930). Taylor kept a detailed journal recording where and when he purchased early American antiques. He noted for this entry: "Maple Butterfly Table bought from Miss Rosella Hopkins of Trumbull Ct. to whom it came from her ancestors, the Thompson family of Portland Conn. This table when bought was minus the wings top and drawer. However the frame was in good shape with feet intact…[it] is therefore the smallest butterfly table I have ever seen or heard of. The legs instead of raking two ways as is usual rake four ways…The wings support for leaves do not sit opposite each other as is customary with butterfly tables but are off center giving the table a very quaint and unusual appearance. I waited over a year to get possession of this table and it is among the most prized pieces of my collection. It was examined by several experts while in the rough and excited great interest for its several very unusual features." Prior to his death, Taylor bequeathed items in his collection to descendants.] [The Taylor Collection]
