Edward Charles Volkert (American, 1871-1935), "Oxen and Driver", oil on canvas depicting pair oxen pulling wagon loaded with kindling, farm hand walking with head down behind wagon, signed "Edw. Volkert" LL, label from the Connecticut Gallery, Marlborough, CT adhered to top frame verso, isolated craquelure particularly visible on body and front legs of darker ox, not examined out of frame, ss: 19 1/4" h. x 23 1/4" w. [Known as "America's cattle painter", Volkert also liked to paint oxen because they stayed still and were not as curious as cows. From 1922 until 1933, Volkert was an involved member of the Old Lyme artist's colony.]
