English coromandel nécessaire de voyage or dressing/ vanity case by Jenner & Knewstub, 1884, London, coromandel wood case with fitted blue velvet interior designed and with patented mechanisms by George Betjemann & Sons (pat. 134), including five articulated compartments and two secret drawers, which houses a great variety of toiletries including scissors, a glove buttoning hook, corkscrew, double-ended medicine spoon, ribbon threaders, tweezers, nail file, etc., thirteen matching cut crystal jars with gilded sterling silver reticulated lids and raised monograms, front of case opens to reveal three hand mirrors, one large and two small, all with matching monogram and etched design but no hallmarks or maker's marks seen, and six ivory pieces including two hairbrushes, two clothing brushes, glove stretchers and a shoe horn, mirror with matching reticulated and gilded border mounted to interior cover, Jenner & Knewstub maker's plaque to fold old front panel reads "Jenner & Knewstub, 33 St. James St. & 66 Jermyn St.", wear consistent with age and use including nicks and small areas of wear to case, wear to blue velvet fittings from removal of items, small areas of silver loss to hand-mirrors, some manicure items lacking J&K hallmarks and sterling rampant (all scissors, both pencils, hook, corkscrew, and small unknown tool), no key, minor age cracks to ivory and coromandel, small 1/4" chip of veneer missing to side of one lower compartment, etc., overall: 8 3/4" h. x 13 1/2" w. x 10 1/4" d.
