Hughes, two Civil War era portraits, oil on canvas, 1859, the first "Portrait of a lady" depicts a matronly woman wearing elaborate lace bonnet and shawl over black mourning dress, her hands crossed in her lap, signed and dated 1859 in lower left, toned background, craquelure; the second, "Portrait of a Gentleman" depicts a seated man, holding spectacles, watch fob can be seen below, his elbow rests on a book and letter, signed and dated lower right, toning, craquelure, small patch on back of canvas; both contained in gilded and molded frames, wear consistent with age and use including surface mold and areas of restoration throughout, including on faces, pair sold as is, ss: 35 1/2" h. x 27" w.
