James Drummond Herbert (American, 1896-1970), "The King's Away #2", 1957, oil on canvas depicting central figure, a jester, in red suit sporting royal regalia including train, crown, and orb, flanked by crowned jester in blue bowing at figure's right and white-garbed harlequin kneeling with sheathed sword at figure's left, signed UL corner canvas verso and initialed "J.D.H" center verso, signed in three places along top stretcher, also labeled with work title, medium, date, and measurements verso, expected wear including minor loss to frame, ss: 39 1/2" h. x 49 3/4" w. [Brochure entitled "A Salute to Canada: Watercolors, Drawings, & Oils by James D. Herbert, 1896-1970" is included with this piece. Herbert was educated in the United States and Paris, enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1917. During and after the interwar period, Herbert was involved in advertising, fashion illustration, and WWII propaganda.
