Jared B. Flagg, (American, 1820-1899), "John McClellan", c. 1845, oil on canvas, portrait sketch in three quarter profile, excess of bare canvas, in oval gold colored mat, title plaque, label verso, framed and matted under glass, toning, frame heavily damaged, loss of gilt, 30 1/2" h. s 24 1/2" w. [Provenance: Jared B. Flagg enjoyed a successful career in Hartford, supported by prominent citizens throughout the area. Among them was John McClellan (1767-1858) of Woodstock, CT, who served as a Major of the militia during the Revolution. McClellan was also a member of the Connecticut legislature for twenty years. This portrait descended in the Flagg family until it was given to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in 1899. Deaccessioned from the Wadsworth Atheneum (gift of the Artist's family, 1899), sold to benefit acquisition funds.]
