Description:

Johann Berthelsen, (American 1883 - 1972), "Central Park Looking South", oil on canvas, c. 1967-1972, snow scene with pedestrians in foreground including Lee Berthelsen, the artist's son, and the family dog, Wags, park beyond railing with sky scrapers in distance, signed LR, inscribed with title and artist on stretcher, also paper label Milton Schepps, in antiqued gold frame, minor craquelure above towers in skyline and near bottom edge, ss: 11 1/2" h. x 15 1/2" w. [Note: Lee Berthelsen, the artist's son stated this painting was most likely done after 1967 as the Savoy Plaza Hotel was torn down in order to build the General Motors Building; the Pierre Hotel and the Sherry Netherland Hotel are also depicted in this view. Although Central Park was a favored subject matter for Berthelsen, this rare view is the only one like this that the artist's son has seen. Lee Berthelsen also stated that the frame is original and was most likely purchased by the artist from New York City framers called the House of Heidenreich. Berthelsen's wife then "antiqued" the Barbizon-style frames using the old Italian method with gesso and hand-painting so only a little of the gilt showed. The liners are also original and were done to Berthelsen's specifications with gesso and paint.]
