Laci de Gerenday (Hungarian-American, 1911-2001), bronze sculpture of stylized standing bison on black laminated block base, horned animal's silhouette in full relief while undercarriage and prairie grasses are delineated in bas relief, inscribed "Laci de Gerenday Fec." along back of bronze base, laminate loss along left strip as well as small chip located at back right corner, 11" h. x 14 3/4" w. x 6" d. [De Gerenday and his Hungarian missionary family were stranded in the United States after the outbreak of WWI. The family resettled in South Dakota by the late 1920s, where de Gerenday was heavily influenced by Lakota Sioux culture. De Gerenday studied under fellow Hungarian émigré and protégé of Auguste Rodin Alexander Finta (1881-1958) before completing New Deal commissioned art projects in the late 1930s, working at the Modern Art Foundry in Queens during the postwar years, and serving as an instructor at the Lyme Academy (Lyme, CT) for twenty-one years until his death.
