[Powell entered the Confederate Army at age 17 and after the war he studied with Thomas Moran in Philadelphia, where he was enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Powell also studied in New York, Rome, Paris, and London. Powell is best known for his majestic and "Turneresque" renderings of the Venetian canals, the American West and the Holy Land.]
