Description:

MANUSCRIPT: Mathurine de Vallois aka "Mathurine la folle" (French, 16th/17th C.) signed five page document dated July 1628, pencil written inscription in margin of first page in translation reads, "Mathurine de Valois, jester of Henri IV, who stopped the knife of Jean Châtel", typewritten labels in English and French give synopses of manuscript contents, frontispiece stamped "Collection de Dumont de Villeneuve", bound in half leather folio, expected wear including some foxing, discoloration and wear to covers. [Mathurine de Vallois was a female jester or "folle" in the royal household. In 1594, "la folle" aided in the capture of Jean Châtel (French, 1575-1594), a disgruntled student who stabbed Henri IV (French, 1553-1610). Châtel was promptly executed; Henri IV would be assassinated by Catholic partisan François Ravaillac sixteen years later. Records indicate the Mathurine continued in the service of Henri IV's widow Marie de Medici, and that she was rewarded a pension of 1,200 livres by Louis XIII in 1622. It is possible that this document recounts Mathurine's role in the Châtel assassination attempt in part to justify another stipend.]
