Description:

MAPS: NEW ENGLAND & NEW YORK, one map, after John Speed, A Map of New England and New York, with Descriptive Text on Verso., London, c. 1676 or later, hand-colored map on chain-laid paper with English letterpress text verso, plate size approx. 15 1/2" x 20 1/2", full sheet with wide margins, additional details: traditionally attributed to John Speed, illustrating the English colonies of New England and the former Dutch territory of New Netherland, now called New York. Based on earlier Dutch prototypes, the map displays the imaginative visual vocabulary of 17th-century cartography, including sea monsters, wild animals, forests, and a compass rose. The verso includes the full three-column English text titled "The Description of New England" and "The Description of New Netherland," printed in black letter. Printed on chain-laid paper and hand-colored in a period style, the sheet notably lacks a center fold, as typically found in bound atlas copies—suggesting the possibility that this is a later restrike or a more recent reproduction. Offered as found, with no representation made as to precise date of printing. Buyers are encouraged to examine in person.
