Description:

M. Liebermann, 12 3/4" X 15". Good overall condition with no signs of inpainting or touch- up under blacklight. No repairs to the support. From Dr. Matthais Eberle certificate of authenticity: "Style, brushwork and motif are typical for Liebermann~dq~s work in the first decade of the twentieth century." The partial label verso identifies a fragmentary stamp as the art shop of Doris Ranft, Potsdamer - Str. 118, where Liebermann ordered many of the canvases and board between 1907-1912. "...there exists a whole series of very similar beach scenes from august and september 1908, when Liebermann stayed in Noordwijk (Netherlands). There he painted about 20 beach scenes. The one mentioned above belongs also to the production of these months. Closest in size (32.5 X 38.7 cm) and subject (stormy beach) is a painting (oeuvre cat. Nr. 1908/20, today in a private collection, Switzerland) signed "Liebermann 08" with the same stamp on the reverse. Therefore the painting will be included in the supplement to my catalogue raisonne. The number is 1908/20a." We would like to thank Dr. Matthais Eberle for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry. His certificate of authenticity will be available to the buyer.
