[Family provenance: Frederick Albrecht Vethaken (FAV), born January 7th, 1756 in Petershagen, Prussia to parents Johan Vethacken (b. 1720) and Henrietta Marie Delius (1725 - 1802). Because he was the second son and would not inherit the family estate due to the custom of primogeniture, his father gifted him sufficient gold and a ship to make his way in the world. FAV chose Dutch Guyana (South America) to seek his new life, where he met and married Maria Johanna Jansen (MJJ) in 1778. They settled in Demerara and had five children with three surviving childhood: Adrianne Henrietta (AHV), b. 1781; Johanna Louisa (JVL), b. 1786; and Frederick Henry (FHV), b. 1791. FAV managed slave-worked plantations for wealthy New York Dutch and used his ship as a merchant ship to transport cargo. Throughout the 1780''s and 1790''s there were major seizures of the three Dutch colonies, including Demerara, first by the French and then the British. Because of the unrest FAV decided to move the family to America, first sending his artistic daughter Adrianne Henrietta Vethaken (AHV) for education in Boston, accompanied by his wife. The rest of the family followed in 1796, as evidenced by their passports, including several black servants. In 1798 they moved to Paterson, NJ, where FAV and MJJ had two more children: John William (JWV), b. 1798, and Albrecht George Delius (AGDV), b. 1799. Their last child, Hennrietta Amilia (HAV) was born in 1801, in New York City. Frederick Albrecht Vethaken died on April 2nd, 1810 in Poughkeepsie, New York.]
