Mourning picture, c. 1820, English, silk on silk, large scene with men and women mourning at the urn-topped tomb of Hercules Heron (d. 1816) and Elizabeth Heron (d. 1808), a smaller tomb in the background, on which a woman leans her head, is dedicated to the memory of John Heron (b. 179-) and Jane Heron (b. 1799), the heads and sky are painted and the tomb inscriptions are inked, the rest of the scene is worked in silk floss and chenille yarns, gilt on gesso wood frame, fair condition, wrinkled, needs professional mounting, losses to embroidery silk due to insects in the lower skirt of standing woman on right, also on the central tomb, 29 7/8" h. x 24 7/8" w. frame; 24 3/8" h. x 19 1/8" w. sight.
