Pair of American School portraits by Liberato or Liberto Cardella (Italian/American, 1778-1853), "Philo Slocum Newton" and "Elizabeth Anne Pelton Newton", c. 1851, oil on canvas, contained in matching gilded frames with ornate shell moldings to corners, details include: "Philo Slocum Newton", aged 40 (born March 29th, 1811 in Franklin, MA, and died May 2nd, 1891 in Hartford), depicts bearded gentleman in three quarter profile with light blue eyes and seated in a red chair, painted oval composition, old label verso reads "Portrait of Philo Slocomb Newton/ painted by Mr. Cardella in 1851", wear consistent with age including craquelure and scattered loss, relined, 29 1/2" h. x 24 1/2" w.; and "Elizabeth Anne Pelton Newton", aged 29, (born 1822 in Wethersfield, CT, and died in 1911), depicts an attractive young brunette woman with delicate features, dressed in black with ornate hair comb, gold pierced drop earrings and jeweled brooch holding red ribbon, seated in upholstered chair of deep turquoise, stamped verso "PREPARED BY ED DECHAUX NEW YORK" along with applied Hartford Daily Times article dated July 30th, 1897, detailing the death of artist Cardella, as well as lengthy inscriptions by daughter Anne Hawley detailing her mother's experience sitting for the portrait and order of family descent, wear consistent with age including craquelure and scattered loss, ss: 29 1/2" h. x 24 1/2" w. [NOTE: Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT, has three portraits by Liberato Cardella in its American Art Collection][PROVENANCE: Given by the sitter, Elizabeth Newton, to her daughter Anna Hawley in 1897, and then owned by descent.]
