Pair of Biedermeier style side chairs, c. 1830s, splats carved with two serpents coiling around urn, spandrels under mid-rail carved with bas relief of oak leaves and acorns, pale green floral needlepoint upholstered seats, raking saber legs, both chairs with isolated repairs to splats, one serpent tail reinforced with nail, some in-filling of insect damaged or checked areas as well as joints, minor loss to cushions including one small side tear, expected surface wear, 34 1/2" h. x 17 3/4" w. x 17" d. [Chairs were purchased from Robert Abels, Little Treasure Shop, NYC in 1920s. Tradition maintains chairs were once owned by Carola of Vasa, Queen of Saxony (Swedish, 1833-1907). Photocopies of 1929 letter from Pittsburgh, PA firm Seymour, Patterson & Siebeneck, news clipping, and sale brochure will be available to successful owner.]
