Portrait of Titanic survivor, John "Jack" Borland Thayer III (American, 1894–1945), oil on canvas, depicts the mustached subject in mid-life, seated and dressed in professional attire, darkly toned background, no artist signature viewed, wear consistent with age, some surface loss possibly due to over-cleaning, some small areas of craquelure, etc., sold as found, in carved frame with loss, ss: 33" h. x 26" w. [VERBAL PROVENANCE: Owned by descent in Thayer/ Talbott family.][NOTE: the subject, John Thayer III, was the brother of Margaret Thayer (1898–1960), later Mrs. Harold Elstner Talbott Jr.), and was a first-class passenger on RMS Titanic along with his mother, father and maid, who survived after the ship struck an iceberg and sank on April 15, 1912. He was one of only forty individuals to survive jumping into the sea, and sadly his father did not survive the sinking. Thayer later wrote and privately published his recollection of the sinking in a pamphlet titled "The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic".
