Purchased as William MacLeod (American, 1811-1892), oil on artist board, "Spring in the Potomac," small pastoral spring landscape with small cabin, scattered flowering trees, cows, ducks, and boats in or near a body of water, indistinct inscription verso (protected behind plexiglass) that reads "Spring in the Potomac / Painted [by?] WM / 186[?]"; in 20th C. gilt frame and with white linen mat, 2 1/4" deep overall; very good condition; ss: 4 1/2" h. x 7 3/4" w. Provenance: Purchased from the MacFarlane Collection, Santa Barbara, CA in 2004 for $12,000. According to the provenance on the receipt, the painting was purchased around 1988 out of an estate in Old Town Alexandria.
