Description:

Rembrandt Harmenz, Van Rijn (Netherlands) 1606-1669. Jews in Synagogue. Etching and drypoint, 1648. Bartsch 126; Hind 234; Boon-White 126, ii/III; Bjorklund/Barnard 48d, iii/III; Nowell-Usticke, iii/VII. A fine harmonius impression with a range of tone before the heavy retouching in the posthumous Basan impressions, on laid paper with thread margins. 74 x 129 mm. (2 7/8 x 5 1/16 in.). Ex Coll: George Bjorklund (Lugt 1138c) While this impression is probably posthumous (lifetime impressions are exceedingly rare) this impression does confirm Bjorklund's description, hardly unexpected since he owned this impression. In all likelihood this is probably a late 17th century or early 18th century impression with only minor differences in appearance from the lifetime second state.
