SILVER: Hester Bateman (English, 1708 - 1794), George III sterling sugar basket, 1786, navette form basket raised on conforming pedestal foot, beaded rim and swing handle, pierced openwork decorative bands to top and bottom rims, bright cut engraved foliate swags and crest of lion in profile in central rondel above chased motto in ribbon "Floreat Majestas" (motto of the Scottish clan of Brown, meaning 'Let majesty flourish'"), basket contains cobalt blue glass insert with pontil mark, hallmarked on base with lion passant, Leopard's head crowned, "l" mark (London date letter for 1786), George III mark, and "H B" in script (maker's mark for Hester Bateman, entered 1761), wear consistent with age and use including three small imperfections including one below handle and one to lower waist, small nicks to edge of glass insert, etc., 4 1/2" h. to top of basket; 6 3/4" h. (to top of upraised handle) x 4 3/4" w. x 6" l. (weight: 6.5 ozt.) [PROVENANCE: Purchased from William Walter, Chancery Lane, London. W.
