Description:

Steinway piano, model O, 1901, currently not in playing condition nor could it be put in playing condition without a complete rebuild, the soundboard is cracked beyond repair and needs replacement, the pin block no longer has adequate torque and needs to be replaced, the action, back action and dampers need a complete rebuild, the ivory keys are in excellent shape and could be cleaned and polished, the finish is not original and in fair shape compared to something with original finish however needs attention and could possibly be salvaged depending on expectations, this model Steinway would be a good candidate for a serious musician or rebuilder, typically this model is well suited for home studios or small performance venues, $500 to $1500 core value, minimum rebuild price would start around $25,000 and go as high as $60,000 depending on rebuilder. [VERBAL PROVENANCE: The 1901 Steinway was owned by Mrs Helen Rand, a New York socialite, who acquired it in the 1940's when she purchased and converted a former New York Prohibition-era speakeasy on 53rd street in New York city (formerly known as Tony's) into the Hour Glass restaurant and club. Mrs Rand's young niece, Dorothy Williams, sang to patrons while Ms. Rand's sister, Mary, would play the Steinway. Her niece would go on to win the Miss Connecticut title and the Steinway passed to her in the mid 1950's when the club closed. Her niece, Dorothy kept the piano in her home(s) for more than 60 years until her passing earlier this year.]
