TEXTILE: Toile whole cloth quilt with design of a naval attack on Gibraltar, c.1790-1800, cotton, (32 1/4-inch repeat), with a commemorative medallion featuring General Elliott held aloft by angels, banner reads "The glorious defense of Gibraltar in destruction of the floating batteries by the heroic Elliott and his brave garrison", the toile (copperplate print) is red on white, clamshell quilting in white thread, front to back binding, plain white backing, wear consistent with age and use with some significant fading in some areas, 95" x 89 1/2". [NOTE: This rare toile commemorates George Augustus Eliott, 1st Baron Heathfield, (1717 - 1790), who commanded the Gibraltar garrison during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, which lasted from 1779 to 1783, defending it against the French and Spanish.]
