Thomas Harris Robinson (Canadian-American, c. 1834-1888), "Black Dog", oil on canvas depicting portrait of black cocker spaniel reclining against brown background, estate stamp "T. Robinson Sale" inscribed LL, period frame bearing plaque engraved "T. Robinson", relined canvas, several major creases and folds, craquelure, frame rubbing, past restoration, label attached at back with masking tape, not examined out of frame, ss: 14" h. x 19 3/4" w. [Some artist's biographical information compiled by Bert Gallery (Providence, RI) included with piece. Robinson studied painting in Paris where he was heavily influenced by members of the Barbizon School. A member of the literary and artistic circle of leading Boston painter William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879), Robinson also served as an art buyer for Vose Gallery (Boston, MA).]
